Hornet on Final

Chapter I — Aviation

Puerto Rican Operations Area (PROA)

operational workups

My last Navy duty on an aircraft carrier was onboard the USS HARRY S TRUMAN for a few weeks in 2009. Knowing it was going to be my last visit, I took a couple thousand images - digital is cheap. Here, an F/A-18 Super Hornet, the advanced single seat version of the model, is " at the ramp", preparing to land back on the aircraft carrier and snag an arresting gear cable. In the background you can see the ship assigned to "plane guard" duty to fish an aviator out of the water should he miss his landing. In honesty, the "plane guard" duty was more important during the days of propeller driven aircraft and the early days of jets.
